April showers bring many letters

April is National Letter Writing Month. It is also National Poetry, Donate Life Awareness, Canine Fitness, and Fresh Celery Month, so it’s a busy time! Please forgive the tardiness of this post apropos of one of our most cherished activities, letter writing. We’re treating this as a library on/for/about letter writing to encourage our lovely readers to put pen to paper, stamp to envelope, and send away. Behold: Our Five Noteworthy National Letter Writing Month Sites! Refer to them early and often, and make National Letter Writing Month last all year long.

Sometimes that blank sheet of stationery is intimidating, so if you’re looking for a prompt, peruse the helpful list at Write_On. A few of our favorites from their post: reach out to a former educator and let them know how meaningful their class was, try the extra-adorable pet-to-pet communiqué, or get all meta- and write a letter to your mail carrier.

Springy floral stationery ready to blossom with sweet sentiments (or sass) can be found in the shop or at our website

At On Paper we intentionally stock beautiful and quirky, but mainly blank greeting cards because nobody says it better than you. If you’re nervous about how or what to say, rest assured there are no rules. There are, however, some helpful suggestions. Michael Kovac’s site, Meditations In Ink, is chock full no nonsense insight to support your letter writing.

We love the wood block designs of Heartell Press--beautiful on the outside, spacious on the inside

Once and a while we hear someone bemoan nobody sends letters anymore. Our 20th anniversary begs to differ, but if you’re looking for ways to articulate the value you see in writing and receiving letters you might like this list from the Huffington Post.

We truly believe in the beauty of a handwritten note, no matter how unique the penmanship. Seriously. That said, we’re also pretty fond of the click-tip-tap-tap of a typewriter. Tom Hanks knows what we mean. Listen to what he has to say on the subject and then stop by On Paper to try your hand on a 1940s Royal in our typing station. If that’s too modern for you, we’ve got some incredible Underwoods from the 20s and 30s for sale.

You might just click with our typing station!

Letter writing is, in fact, a social activity. Write? We may be alone as we compose a note, but we’re sending it to communicate with someone. If you’re looking for a way make it more extroverted, organize your own letter writing social! Did we just hear you just squeal with glee? Here’s a guide to getting it done. Incidentally, we're your paperie to get in tip top social shape. We have everything you need except the snacks and stamps.

This On Paper folded note card is available in 26 magical letters--swing by the website to order a set for you, and your friend, and your other friend

In addition to the faithful felt-tipped Le Pen and glass dipping pens, we carry calligraphy sets with nibs aplenty. Pen-speriment with friends!

Dear reader, it's been lovely spending this time with you. We hope you've been inspired to write. Keep in touch, On Paper
